Viter Energy Mints |
October, 2015 I got an email from Jacob at Viter Energy Mints a couple weeks ago. He and a friend Bryan started up the company after they came up with a new energy mint. Jacob recently ran across my trucking blog and figured that truckers would be perfect candidates who could enjoy and benefit from their product. He asked if I would be interested in reviewing this product and writing about it. I wrote back saying that I would be happy to. He emailed me a coupon for a free 6-pack of mints to try.
I had 6 canisters of Viter containing 20 mints each to try, so I came up with a plan. I selected three of our drivers to ask if they would be willing to try them and report back to me. The only criteria I used in the selection process was that each driver was driving on overnight trips and that they had all tried other energy supplements (such as 5 Hour Energy, Monster, etc.) while driving before.
The first to report back was Blaine. He runs across Nevada to Reno a couple times every week. He was about four hours from his destination and took two of the mints at once. Blaine stated that he almost immediately felt refreshed was alert the rest of the way. In fact, he said he had trouble falling asleep right away when he went into the sleeper after four hours. He gave me a thumbs up and was impressed with the product, also stating that he would use only one mint at a time in the future. I told him that the normal price of the product is about $20 for a six pack of tins containing a total of 120 mints and he thought it was a good deal.
The next driver I talked to was Ted, who also stated that the product worked well for him also. He thought the price was very reasonable. He stated that he would prefer a mint with real sugar, because he has some issues with artificial sweeteners and his stomach. But, overall, another thumbs up.
The third driver, Craig, was on the same run across Nevada with Blaine the other night and took two mints at once the same time Blaine did, about four hours from his destination. His first comment was that they work great, “but from now on I’m only going to take one at a time!” He said that he also, after going in the sleeper tossed and turned for a couple hours before falling asleep. After telling him the retail price of the product, he also thought it was a good deal. The strong wintergreen flavor was a bit too much for him, but said taking two at once contributed to that and thought he would get used to and enjoy the taste quickly by only taking one at a time.
My Review
I was able to try the Viter Energy Mints myself this week as I went on a 900 mile round trip run to Idaho and back starting Tuesday morning. I started about 6 am and got delayed immediately with a tractor maintenance issue for about an hour. I then went to pick up my load and had to stand around for another hour and a half before it was finally ready. Being delayed that amount of time meant it was going to be a long day.
By late afternoon, I did start to get a little drowsy so I opened up my tin and tried one. The wintergreen flavor was indeed strong, but not objectionable. I did not chew it but put it under my tongue and let it dissolve. It does not take long, unlike a hard candy, it dissolves rather quickly and before it was even gone, was alert again. I was impressed! Personally, I have never done the 5-hour energy thing as I thought the product was way overpriced. For the same reason I don’t buy the energy drinks like Monster, etc because I’m basically a tightwad and feel like the price is too high and I don't want all that sugar.
That has left me with two choices when I need a boost, coffee or regular Coke or Dr. Pepper. I only drink about a cup of coffee when I get up and rarely any the rest of the day. I generally limit myself to one Coke per day, trying to curtail that sugar intake. Years ago, when I was driving a lot of “over the road”, I would suck down 4 or 5 Cokes a day. Those Cokes and cigarettes would keep me going. Quitting smoking in 2007 and cutting back sugar left a void. I can’t stand the aftertaste of diet drinks, colas and absolutely refuse to drink any of them. So I’ve been having to tough it out (crank the A/C or the volume of a favorite CD, open the windows, etc) or pull over for a bit when becoming drowsy.
The next morning, waking up and getting out of the sleeper, I had about 300 miles to go and wanted to get going and get back. I didn’t even get a coffee, but started driving, opening a bottle of Coke from my cooler and popping a Viter energy mint in my mouth. The wintergreen was strong but refreshing, in a few minutes I was wide awake, alert and amazed at how I felt. Usually, it takes awhile for me to feel good driving in the morning and I have to endure through the yawns, even after a cup of coffee. I definitely noticed the difference.
Bottom Line
I really like this product! For me, it’s going to be something I intend to carry in my travel bag and have on-hand. I could envision many other uses for it. I don’t drive that much any more and work in the office quite a bit. These could be a perfect pick-me-up for those times when needed, as in being in a long boring meeting, training session, or just getting through that mid afternoon drowsy period. It’s much more convenient and healthy than drinking a sugar-filled cola drink! And it helps to freshen your breath. At about $20.00 for 120 mints, the cost is only about 17 cents per mint! That is a bargain compared to the price of the alternatives. You can order your own at the links provided.
Viter is available at Amazon.com and the regular price is $19.97 with free two day shipping if you are an Amazon Prime member. I’ve been a Prime member for a couple years now and find that the free shipping more than offsets the $100 per year annual fee for all of the stuff that I order. And you get all the movies, TV shows and music with it. Viter Energy Mints
