My Review - 2016 Nissan Altima

3300 Miles is a Good Road Test!


A few weeks ago I decided to rent a car for my annual two week vacation back to Wisconsin. My current car (PT Cruiser Turbo) gets lousy fuel mileage (about 17 mpg combined) and guessed it would be even worse with the 80 MPH speed limits across Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. I figured the trip would work that 4 cylinder motor too hard, as it revs pretty high at highway speed.

So I shopped some off-airport rental car sites, including Enterprise, Payless and Budget, finding a pretty good deal at Payless which had rental center within 5 miles of my house. They quoted me a rate of $320.00 for 14 days unlimited mileage for what they call an intermediate (Nissan Versa or similar). Figuring I could probably double the fuel mileage versus taking the PT Cruiser, I decided to give it a try.

I used Uber to get over to pick up the car on a Friday morning, the sales-guy took my info and printed out the contract, handing me the keys to a 2016 Altima, saying I was upgraded to a full-size car because that's all they had. I walked out, checked it for any damage and took off to go home and get my gear.

My first impression was that it was a pretty good looking car. It had dual exhausts and seemed to have more than satisfactory power. The engine sounded good under throttle and the transmission was one of those new variable-drive units that you couldn't even feel it downshift under acceleration. When requiring more power you would see the rpm increase smoothly on the tach with no discernible lurch forward.

The car had less than 9,000 miles on it, excellent comfortable power seats, climate control and even a back-up camera in the info-tainment center. The roomy interior was great and it had a large trunk. The stereo system wasn't that great, just OK. The steering was kind of light for my taste and the brakes a little touchy, although you get used to them. The highway ride was very good but the large car didn't feel very agile on curves and corners. The Chevy Malibu I used to have had more of an enjoyable, sporty feel driving it, I suppose you shouldn't expect the same in a full size car.

However!
I absolutely could not believe the mileage this car was getting. I left Salt Lake with a full tank, heading over the Wasatch mountain range with the computer telling me I had better than a 600 mile range before I would need fuel! At Rawlins, Wy (about 300 miles away), I still had half a tank of fuel but filled up because they had a good price. My next fuel stop was in Murdo, SD, about 800 miles from Salt Lake and my total cost of fuel at that point was $57.00!

Average mileage for the entire trip was 36.23 miles per gallon which was astonishing to me in a full size car. I was fighting a stiff wind most of trip out and again coming back in South Dakota and Wyoming. At the midway point of my trip in Wisconsin, the average was up to almost 38 MPG! The total fuel consumed was 91 gallons for the entire trip and I figured I would have used about 175 gallons in the PT Cruiser. With the average price of fuel at $2.20 per gallon I had saved about $182.00, meaning my net cost for the rental was only $138.00. Considering the wear and tear I would have put on my vehicle, I will do this every year from now on that I have the PT Cruiser.

In fact I'm certainly considering an Altima as my next vehicle, after doing some checking on the internet, you can buy a similarly equipped new one for about $25,000. The last new vehicle I bought was a 2009 Malibu that averaged 29 MPG and paid about $22,000 for it. It was a nice driving car but didn't have anywhere near the roominess and economy of the Altima.

Nevada Grants AutoSock Approval as Chain Alternative

Nov, 2014  The state of Nevada recently approved the use of AutoSock’s textile traction devices as alternatives to metal chains in snowy conditions. Nevada had required the use of chains in certain operating conditions.
“The approval process for Alternative Traction Devices can be complex and differ from state to state,” said Chuck McGee, president of McGee Company, which distributes AutoSock. “Although many states have no legal requirements for ATDs as long as the device does not cause damage to the road surface, approval has been granted in several states where chain requirements are in effect.”
The AutoSock is designed with certain fibers and surface patterns to maximize friction on snow and ice covered roads by making the contact area exposed to dry friction as large as possible. The material is softer than asphalt or concrete and will not damage roads, according to AutoSock.
“In testing on trucks, AutoSock has exhibited better traction and is fully compatible with ABS and traction control systems,” said Bernt J Rosli, CEO of AutoSock.
The AutoSock is available for passenger vehicles and Class 3-8 medium- and heavy-duty trucks. The AutoSock weighs less than 5 pounds per pair and can be stored inside a cab or tool compartment.

I Drive the Detroit DT12 Automated Manual 12 Speed Transmission - Road Test

Several months ago, I drove a tractor equipped with an automatic transmission for the first time in my life. See the following link to that post, I Drive the Smart Shift Automatic Transmission

I was not at all happy with it, especially driving it on slippery, snow covered roads.

A few weeks ago one of our drivers picked up a new test tractor in Denver for our location to try out. He brought it back to Salt Lake City and we have been running it in our fleet. The tractor is a Freightliner Cascadia conventional sleeper with a 13 liter Cummings and the new Detroit DT12 Automated transmission in it. "The Detroit DT12 is a 12-speed non-synchronized manual transmission with pneumatic X-Y shift and clutch actuators." We were to test it pulling Rocky Mountain doubles but before that ever happened, the powers that be found out that the tractor is not warranted to pull over 90,000 lbs. gross combination vehicle weight. Add to that, the 13 liter engines have 300 to 400 lbs. less torque than our current 15 liters. That immediately made the tractor impractical for us as we pull a lot of combination trailer sets in the Rocky Mountain region with gross combination weights of up to 128,000 lbs.!

We still have the tractor for now and I had the chance to drive it from Salt Lake to Richfield, Utah a few days ago on a round trip of about 300 miles. I pulled a single 48 foot trailer and was grossing about 75,000 lbs to Richfield and came back empty.

It had a paddle shift on the right side of the steering wheel that was somewhat similar to the Smart Shift. One switch to choose neutral, drive or reverse and another to choose automatic or manual. For a manual downshift, you push the lever towards the dashboard away from you and for up-shifts pull the paddle towards you. One difference is that the Jake brake is also controlled by the paddle. Having the paddle in the raised position towards the top of the steering wheel has the Jake off and pushing the paddle sequentially towards the floor gives you three choices of Jake brake retarding (all the way down is full on).
Smart Shift Automated

The Bobtail  After pre-tripping the tractor at the shop I had to bobtail it a couple of miles to pick up the loaded trailer. I decided to just put it in drive and see what would happen. Exiting the driveway I was surprised at how smoothly the transmission up-shifted. Compared to the Smart Shift, it was a very big difference. The Smart Shift was much more of a sudden, unpredictable and rough shift, and when I drove it on snow, the wheels would constantly break traction (even while trying hard to stay light on the throttle) while bob-tailing with the rough shifts.

Another big difference with the DT12 was that it would skip shifts if not needed to pull a load. The Smart Shift, on automatic, would always start in second gear and shift through every gear all the way to 10th, no matter what. Bob-tailing was ridiculous with the constant slack and surge from running through every gear! The DT12 would actually start out in 4th gear bob-tailing and skip to 6th on the next shift, I don't know how it could figure I didn't have a trailer!

The Load  After hooking my loaded trailer, I took off out of the yard a few blocks before coming onto the freeway entrance going south. Under load and level terrain, the tractor would start in second gear (same as I would if doing it myself) and up-shift through every gear if you kept your foot hard on the throttle. If you had some momentum and backed off the throttle some, it would sense that it could skip a gear and do it. The only bad side was that it seemed a bit sluggish and slow shifting, but the shifts were predictable and I could feel when the they were coming, unlike the Smart Shift!

The Hills  There is supposed to be a performance automatic mode option available but the transmission I had did not have it. While pulling a load with the cruise control set, no matter what the grade of a hill you are approaching, the tranny will not downshift until it lugs down to about 1100 RPM. With the smaller 13 liter engine and a big hill coming up, I found that an earlier downshift at about 1300 or 1400 RPM provided much better performance. The only way to get that earlier downshift would be to floor the accelerator with my foot (or have it in manual mode). If you didn't want to lose momentum, you had to constantly monitor upcoming grades and take action with your foot.

The "Mexican Overdrive"  One interesting feature of this transmission is "eCoast".  With the cruise control set, it disengages the transmission (shifting it to neutral)  from the drive-train while the truck is coasting, allowing the engine to idle at 600 RPM and reducing mechanical drag. This is something that I was taught never to do as a driver with a manual transmission, as the truck could easily get away from you on a downgrade, consequently not being able to get it back in gear as you start overheating the brakes. If the truck is coasting below 4 MPH over your cruise control set speed, the eCoast will engage. If your speed increases too much, it will disengage, downshift and apply the Jake as needed. Behold the wonders of technology!

The Empty  After swapping trailers in Richfield, I returned to Salt Lake with an empty. With the light trailer, the tranny would often skip a couple gears if it didn't need them. The shifts were surprisingly smooth and I could feel when they were coming. When decelerating from highway speed, the transmission will downshift using the Jake brake if you have it on.  The DT12 will skip-shift more often than not, even when decelerating, which really smoothed things out. As Jim Park remarked in his test, "I found it useful to shut off the engine brake below fifth gear, because it got a little "torque-y" in the cab at low speed".

The Verdict  I was impressed with DT12. I could get used to driving with this transmission, but if it was up to me, I would still go with a manual 10 or 13 speed. Being more of an "old school" driver, I prefer the satisfaction of using my skills to shift smoothly and work my truck efficiently. Seems to me that a good old mechanical tranny and clutch would be a lot cheaper, more reliable and subject to fewer breakdowns and problems. Although, unlike the Smart Shift, which was a near constant irritation to drive, I could live with the DT12. I averaged 8.5 MPG on my round trip (only loaded one way) which was very good mileage. I am sure the MPG was a result of the smaller engine and not only the transmission. This particular engine-tranny combo will not work for us but it would seem to be a good choice for fleets that drive out east.

Road Test - Dodge Dart will save you a speeding ticket

SALT LAKE CITY — Dodge loaned us a Dart Limited for a week of testing. It had an impressive list of options for a car of its size and price, but it lacked one big one feature.
As equipped, the tester retails for $25,190. That’s the higher-end of the price category, but consider:
It has a power seat for the driver, and shotgun gets ratcheting height adjustment. If you've ever used it (it's popular on Volkswagens), you know how good it is at getting the seat in a position you actually want. The seat bottom flips up to give a small storage area. The seats are both quite comfortable and supportive.
The cruise control downshifts. This can prevent you from speeding when you come to downhills, and avoid getting a speeding ticket in a place like Mantua, which comes at the bottom of a long decline.
The automatic high /low beam works pretty good. Yes, Cadillac had this feature in the 1950s, but you don’t see it often today, and especially not on economy cars.
Blind-spot detectors are on many higher-end cars these days, and the Dart had it. A small triangle lights up in the corner of the side mirrors when a vehicle enters your blind spot.

The biggest like is the tech, and how you interact with it. The heated seats, steering wheel, climate, and radio work with the knobs or touch screen.
You can rewind songs on satellite radio (why not local broadcast bands?), get gas prices in the area, and get movie listings. Other vehicles provide these higher-end features, but the Dart interaction is one of the easiest to navigate.
The gas gauge and RPM needles are real; the rest of the instrument panel is virtual and configurable. Best of all, it’s all very easy to use; there are no joysticks or mice.
The Dart name is being put on an Italian-designed, adapted platform shared with Fiat. Those older than 40 will remember the value name from the 60s and 70s. the original Dart moved from a mid-line to an economy name along its lifespan, with a few sporty and muscle-car variants along the way.
The modern Dart has a proper e-brake so you can drive rally-style. To many, having a brake you can yank with your right hand is no big deal, but it’s becoming an endangered feature.
Matthew Huff agreed to help test-drive the Dart. He says he loves long road trips in the car, alone, or more likely nowadays, with family. His current car is a 2007 Lexus IS250 with all-wheel drive. He says “It corners really well, but you can never really get off the line quick enough to get a buzz.”
Huff says the Dart is faster than his Lexus, but “The problem is I’m not very impressed with the getup and go of my Lexus, and I’m not very pleased with the get up and go of this Dart.”
Our loaner had a good looking, two-liter Tiger Shark engine. The plastic cover doubles as the air intake. Dodge claims 160 horsepower going through a six-speed automatic. There’s a smaller turbo claiming the same power, and a 2.4 boasting 184 horsepower. But 160 horsepower just didn’t feel that quick off the line, maybe because it only makes 147 lb-ft of torque. Gas mileage is 25 city, 36 highway, 29 combined.
As for the handling, tested in Logan canyon, Huff says “My Lexus handles a little better. It digs into the corners, grabs the road a little better.”
The Dart has 10 airbags and lots of handling and aerodynamics technology. Base models start at $16,000. A Mopar Dart is scheduled to come out this summer, with the 1.4-liter turbo with few enhancements to enhance power.
The Dart, at least with the automatic transmission, cannot get you a ticket for coming away from a green light too fast. It did, however, just get an honor from Road and Travel magazine for being earth-friendly with its fuel economy.
If speed is not at the top of your shopping list, the Dart will impress with its command of technology, and the ease of using it.

ROAD TEST: LED headlights ready for prime time

My trucking job mostly involves night driving between Toronto and Montreal, in all weather conditions. So I’m keenly aware of the importance of a good headlight system. And commercial drivers obsess about lights all the time – just leave your fog lights on after the mist has cleared and you’ll hear about it on the CB. Don’t get me wrong. The halogen bulbs in my dedicated Volvo do a pretty good job illuminating the road. But recently I’ve noticed that the clearest and brightest low beams belong to Freightliners, specifically Penske-owned Cascadias, as they slide past me on the Big Road.
I recalled seeing a news blurb somewhere about Penske outfitting its tractor fleet with LED headlights, and was genuinely thrilled when editor James Menzies asked me to test drive one of the retrofits. So one April night my godson Zak and I booked a newish 10-speed Freightliner Cascadia with a 425-horse Cummins ISX engine, and went looking for “the darkness on the edge of town.”
Truck lighting has come a long way since 1896 when Karl Benz mounted candles on his prototype truck. From lanterns to acetylene lamps to sealed beams, to halogen, HID-Xenon and finally LED headlights, it’s always been about seeing and being seen. Over the years, lighting solutions have paralleled – and sometimes lagged behind – other aspects of the automotive trade. But occasionally something new comes along that significantly moves the bar several notches.
The round two- and four-headlight sealed beam systems that we’re all familiar with were standard for 50 years or more, and rectangular headlights, mostly found on trucks, became more common after the 1970s. A major step forward came in the early 1980s when bulbs could be changed separately from the lens and reflector, followed in 1983 by the halogen bulb. By replacing the vacuum lamps with halogen (a combination of several gases) the tungsten filaments burned brighter.
Halogen remains the mainstay among trucking fleets but that could be changing. It tends to yellow with age and grow dimmer, and the bulb life is only about 1,000 hours. You often notice the difference when replacing a burned-out headlight. The new one burns much brighter. Depending on the manufacturer, halogen headlights can lose 20% of their luminosity in only 160 hours. Compare this to the “new generation” LED low beams which might eventually lose 7% of their output, but would take 20,000 hours to do so.
At 16 years of age, Zak is a physicist-in-training, and patiently explained to me the difference between candle power and lumens, photons, neutrons and electrons, as we spent several hours trundling the back roads between Toronto and Georgetown looking for dark stretches of highway. This is the time of year when a lot of animals are moving around and getting struck, so we were actually hoping to see some wildlife darting in front of the truck.
This didn’t happen, but the directional fluting of the beams onto the shoulders of the road was excellent. “Sixty degrees,” Zak announced when we stopped, measuring the sideways flaring of the headlights with his protractor.
This is an intentional design feature, according to Brad Van Riper, chief technology officer at Truck-Lite, which produces the LED headlights.
“We interviewed drivers during the development and they wanted more light on the shoulder of the road, more visibility of fog posts, pedestrians and animals.”
To accomplish the enhanced “road-shoulder” lighting, the design team went to computer simulation  technology to formulate the complex reflector-style beams of the Cascadia.  
“We used a computer-based optical design system to collect and direct the light to the area that we wanted,” says Van Riper.
Stellar is a word I would use for the overall performance, in more ways than one. Besides reaching further into the night than anything else I’d driven, the frequency and spectrum of the white light is meant to mimic that of sunlight or starlight. The only thing comparable right now might be the HID-Xenon system available on Kenworth and Peterbilt packages.
HID-Xenon lights are plenty bright, but tend to have a purple tint, swinging towards the blue, or cooler, end of the spectrum. I talked to one driver of a new Kenworth who thinks they are too bright. This is probably not the case, since all headlamp systems have to meet NHTSA standards. But this particular driver confided via CB radio, “I get flashed all the time.”
By comparison, no one flashed their high beams at me while test driving the Penske Cascadia, but I personally think the intensity of both systems is about the same, though they have slightly different penumbras, and they are both brighter than that to which Joe Highway is accustomed. I was nervous about the amount of light the LEDs were emitting. But to the credit of the Truck-Lite engineers, the horizontal cut-off of the LED’s beam lined up just below a car’s trunk lid at a stop light. LEDs are monochromatic and narrowly focused. To fill out the rest of the light spectrum Truck-Lite used a blue chip that is coated with a phosphor.
“There are many ways of doing this,” says Van Riper, “but the most effective way is by coating the top surface of the LED with a phosphor and when the blue wave length light sees the phosphor, it releases photons that fill the rest of the spectrum, giving you white light.”
Like sunlight, Truck-Lite LED light is designed to be neutral, sitting midway between the cooler signature of the HIDs and the warmer halogen lights that we see on most of today’s trucks. Van Riper cites a study by the University of Michigan which suggests certain wavelengths of LED light suppress the release of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that factors into one’s sleep cycles.
“We’ve had feedback from a lot of drivers that they feel like they’re more alert,” he says.
Truck-Lite has never been that interested in halogen technology and they see LED systems as the way forward. In 2007 they were asked to design an LED system for the US Army which was field-tested on army trucks in Iraq and Afghanistan. They eventually sold 300,000 LED headlights to the US military. These days, the technology is available to anyone as seven-inch round beams and five-inch rectangular units.
But it is Truck-Lite’s application of LEDs to custom aerodynamic headlights like the Cascadia, which marks a new direction for the lighting manufacturer. According to Van Riper, LED headlights for several other truck makes and models should be available later this year.
After fumbling about on concession roads and secondary highways, Zak and I turned the Cascadia towards the industrial wilderness of Milton, Ont. Yes, lots more illumination in the dimly-lit truck yards. Then I remembered a grocery store in Brampton where I used to make night deliveries. This site featured a set of receiving docks that was separated from the nearby suburban townhouses by a wall. The area was always cluttered with debris, abandoned shopping carts and an overflow of garbage from the bulging refuse compressors. It was the loneliest feeling pounding on the steel doors at night and ringing the bell for an eternity with some kind of small creatures shuffling around my feet, anxious for the night receiver to open the door.  
Not to my surprise, the delivery docks were the same, with the same amount of refuse and cabbage leaves scattered on the ground – only now I could see better. And once again I came to realize why I don’t miss delivering to supermarket receiving docks, especially at night.
The last stop was the Husky Truck Stop off Dixie Road. There are always a number of tractors lined up in the parking lot and I was hoping to get a picture of the LED lights beside a conventional system. Nothing doing. Guys are in their bunks and sleeping. Oh, there are always a few drivers fuelling, and a couple in the coffee shop, but despite a full yard, like most truck stops on a Friday night it’s a quiet place. But I finally did sidle up beside a fuel hauler, old style halogen, and there’s no contest in terms of brightness between the two.
The remarkable thing, I suppose, is how a technology that’s so clear and precise could be so much more efficient. According to Van Riper, a rig and trailer completely outfitted in LEDs, as compared to a contemporary truck running on all incandescent lights, actually uses 33 less amps. This is significant, especially to an owner with a big bunk and lots of electrical gadgets, who might have to otherwise consider going to a bigger alternator. The power savings may result in a reduction in fuel consumption which is currently under study.

No question about the benefits and longevity of LED headlights, but the cost involved ($750)  is considerably more than halogen or HID-Xenon. But Van Riper estimates the price will come down as manufacturing and consumer demand heats up, and with Volvo and International coming online, that could happen sooner than later. Meanwhile, Truck-Lite’s offering interested Canadian fleets free one-week trials to see the difference for themselves.

I Drive the Smart Shift Automatic Automated Transmission

Jan/2013: I've driven tractor trailer combinations for about 32 years now and have never driven a road tractor with an automatic transmission, until a couple weeks ago:

Having been scheduled to take a load from Salt Lake City to Grand Junction and back the following day, the tractor I was supposed to use broke down. My manager made arrangements  for our Ryder shop to leave me keys and paperwork for a rental tractor to use. I got to the shop about 4 AM, filled out the paperwork and went out to find the tractor. It was a “day cab” with a California license plate on it, so I knew it wasn't from the local rental fleet. Getting ready to pre-trip the unit, I opened the door, entered the cab and stared at an empty space between the seats where there was supposed to be a shift lever! Sticking out from the right side of the steering wheel, where the trailer brake valve normally is, was an odd looking lever with a big paddle on it. I looked more closely at it and read the words Smart Shift on it. Oh great! I’m leaving on a 580 mile round trip, already a long day, and I have to figure out how this transmission works? I'm sure I uttered a few choice expletives that no-one was there to hear. And by the way, it was snowing moderately heavy and wanted to get moving to see if I could get out ahead of the storm! I also had to go over Soldier summit, a 7,000 foot pass on US HWY 6 on the way to Grand Junction.
First order of business was to bobtail a couple of miles to the Coke yard, get my loaded trailer, then go to the office and pick up a set of chains. I found “D” for drive on the shift lever and decided I would figure out the transmission later. As I bob-tailed out on the street in the snow, there came a rude awakening. The highest gear the tractor would start out in was second gear and it was a ten speed transmission. Treading lightly on the throttle, the drive tires would break loose on every shift and it was a handful to control it. On top of that, it was a California truck with highway tires, not good for traction on snow or ice! I was wondering how I was going to get that thing over Soldier Summit if it was still snowing in the canyon! I quickly flipped the switch over to manual mode, where at least I had control of when it shifted.
My impression after completing the trip was that this particular transmission left a lot to be desired. You can flip a switch and shift it manually by pulling the paddle up for up-shifts and pressing down for downshifts. But, no matter whether you are in manual mode or automatic, it always starts out in second gear. In automatic, it will shift through all nine gears and never skip shift. All that does is waste fuel if you are lightly loaded, empty or bob-tailing. The constant surge and slack shifting while bobtailing immediately became very irritating. You never need second gear to start out bob-tailing or empty. How many years have we been taught that if you can start the truck rolling by letting out the clutch with no throttle, that’s the gear you should use to start? When bob-tailing, I will generally start out in third or fourth gear, third gear if pulling an empty or light trailer. Also, when empty or light, I often skip gears on the up-shift side as long as I’m not lugging the engine. Running through every gear when you don’t need to just wastes time and fuel.
I also quickly discovered that on slippery roads, you do not want to let that thing shift itself! You really have no way to know precisely when the transmission will shift, if you are using the throttle on an upgrade for instance, the tranny will suddenly downshift on you, apply full power and break the drive tires loose without warning. This can get you in trouble before you realize it. I started up the canyon with it snowing heavily with the road snow packed. I engaged the power divider, put the tranny in manual mode and started up the canyon. At least I then had control of gear selection and felt much more comfortable driving the truck. It snowed all the way up to the top of the summit and finally quit after I got down the other side. After that I put it in automatic after getting on dry and level pavement.
The fact that you have to start in second gear (you can select first gear, if needed) and shifting through every gear in auto are my two big gripes about this transmission. While bob-tailing back to the shop at the end of the day, I discovered that you can skip shift while in manual mode by pressing up or down on the paddle two times quickly. It will skip one gear, but you still have to start in second from a stop. I also got tired of my left foot trying to find a nonexistent clutch pedal every time I came to a stop!
My conclusion, you can keep these automatics, I don’t think the extra cost is worth it. A “professional” driver can drive more efficiently with a good old 10 or 13 speed!

Test Driving the New DT12 Automated Transmission

The arrival of Detroit's DT12 automated manual transmission wasn't unexpected. Daimler AG, the parent company of Daimler Trucks North America and Detroit Inc., has been using such transmissions in Europe for many years in the Mercedes Actros line and earlier products. With the company's push toward global commonality in powertrain components, it was inevitable.
The first official inkling we had was a comment by Andreas Renschler, head of Daimler Trucks at Daimler AG, during the 2011 American Trucking Associations annual management conference. It wasn't so much his words as the twinkle in his eye that suggested we were in for something good.
Volvo was the first to make North American truckers comfortable with 12-speed transmissions with its automated I-Shift, and with the change in torque and horsepower profiles in North American engines over the past five years, the 12-speed configuration has proven quite successful.
The steps between the gears match nicely with the broad torque plateaus we see today, rather than the torque peaks of previous engine generations. And when the transmission is doing the shifting and the thinking, drivers really don't have to concern themselves with shift timing to optimize torque and fuel efficiency. Ten, 12, 13, 18 speeds? It hardly matters anymore except in highly specialized applications.
So the DT12 arrived here in mid-2012 with the ice already broken. If what I found on a day-long test drive in August is any indication, I'm sure beads of sweat are already forming on competitors' brows.
DT1 2 Features
The DT12 is a 12-speed non-synchronized manual transmission with pneumatic X-Y shift and clutch actuators. It features a single countershaft and an aluminum housing to minimize weight.

It will be available in two input-torque ratings: 2,050 pounds-feet (789 pounds dry weight) and 1,650 pounds-feet (646 pounds). In direct-drive configuration, it has an overall drive ratio of 14.93:1, in overdrive (0.78) the overall drive ratio is 14.96:1. There are several modes:
eCoast: disengages the transmission from the drivetrain while the truck is coasting, reducing mechanical drag.
Creep: modulates clutch engagement to improve low-speed operation. In traffic, the transmission can be up- and down-shifted at engine idle.
Kick down: functions like a passing gear, initiating a downshift to increase horsepower while passing.
Eco/Performance: changes the shifting strategy to match conditions or fleet/driver preference.
Auto-neutral: automatically returns to neutral if the parking brakes are set or the key is turned off.

According to Brad Williamson, manager, engine and component marketing for Daimler Trucks North America, the first model out the gate in May 2013 will be the 2,050-pound-foot version to mate up with the DD15 engine. In November the 1,650 pounds-foot version will appear matched with a DD13 engine. Sometime in 2014, the DT12 will be available with the DD16 engine.
Performance evaluation
The official test drive of the new Detroit transmission in a Freightliner Cascadia Evolution started with a couple of trips around an 18-mile loop from Yountville, Calif., into Napa on four-lane Route 29, and then back to Yountville on the two-lane Silverado Trail. That gave me an inkling of how it shifted on flat roads and in city traffic.

Its propensity for skip-shifting was immediately obvious. I think I was into 8th gear in three shifts, before I even had the truck pulled fully onto the highway from the parking area where the trucks were staged.
The shifts were done at remarkably low engine speed, 1,400 to 1,600 rpm. I knew then and there I was going to like this transmission. Under normal driving conditions, the engine revs seldom got above 1,600 and often dipped as low as 1,050.
The DT12 will skip-shift more often than not, even when decelerating, which really smoothes things out. I found it useful to shut off the engine brake below fifth gear, because it got a little "torque-y" in the cab at low speed.
I played around with various driving styles, from hard on the throttle to laid back and lazy. The DT12 was comfortable either way. It tended to skip-shift just as often under heavy throttle, but at higher rpm. In Performance mode, the engine ran about 300 rpm higher on most shifts. The shifting was somewhat dependent on how aggressive I was with the throttle pedal.
In the stop-and-go traffic in Napa proper, the smoothness of the clutch actuation was most obvious. At launch and in the moment just before the wheels stopped during braking, it felt much like a car with an automatic transmission. I think it's the smoothest clutch action of any automated gearbox out there.
The next day, I put the boots to the DT12.
Hunter Hill, I-80
What a great place to put an automated transmission through its paces.
Hunter Hill is located just east of Vallejo, Calif., on I-80. From the parking area at the top of the hill, I ran downhill into Vallejo, turned around at Tennessee Street and came back up the hill to Red Top Road, turned around and then headed back to the parking area. It's about a 15-mile loop with a 6% grade, and a much steeper on-ramp at Red Top Road - maybe 8% or 9% - that tested its shifting prowess while climbing under a 75,000-pound load.
I made several trips around the loop, comparing Eco mode with Performance mode, and making the most of eCoast on the moderate grades. I also tried the Advanced Cruise Control on the downhill grade set at Low to maintain my descent speed, the engine brake engaging at 3 mph above the set speed. However, because I was already close to 50 mph at a lazy 1,100 rpm in 12th gear when the hill got serious, I had to manually downshift to get some extra engine braking.
Remarkably, I didn't need to, but I was able to drop two gears on the hill, getting the revs up to 2,200, which the transmission let me do. There's some serious engine braking happening there.
Once I was off the steepest section, I flipped back and forth in the gears, finding I had a three-gear range to choose from. I could descend the hill in 10th, 1 1th, or 12th gear, with engine speed varying accordingly. Talk about options! With the engine brake in position 1, 2, or 3, and in a given gear, I could safely ease down the hill at about any speed I chose.
Climbing the hill was equally exciting. Left to its own devices in Eco mode, the engine pulled down to about 1,100 rpm on each downshift, re-engaging at about 1,400 rpm. I downshifted like that from 12th to 9th gear before the engine was able to maintain 1,150 rpm in the climb. As the grade leveled out near the top, the transmission upshifted to 10th gear at 1,250 rpm, reengaging at about 1,050 and digging deep for the pull. There's lots of torque at 1,050 rpm on the DD15, and the DT12 took advantage of every pound-foot available.
Repeating the climb on a subsequent loop in Performance mode, the engine shifted at about 300 rpm higher than it did in Eco mode, consistently. You'll get up the hill a little faster, but you'll burn more fuel.
In manual mode, when I became the brains of the operation, the shift points set in Eco mode seemed to me to be the logical place for a downshift. Even in manual, the transmission will upshift automatically if the revs drop too low. On one occasion, I grabbed two gears on an upshift, and the transmission let me do it. Nearing the top on leveler ground, I was able to get the engine down to 900 rpm by backing off the throttle a little and letting the engine think power demand was easing. I may have lost a few seconds, but I'm sure I saved a little fuel too.
Coming up the Red Top Road on-ramp was interesting. It's a steeper grade than the highway, and I started at the bottom in 6th gear, 1,400 rpm, at 10 mph. It shifted into 7th at 1,600 rpm, re-engaging at 1,100 rpm. It grabbed 8th gear at 1,600 rpm, re-engaging at 1,200 rpm and so on, until I was up to highway speed. Very low engine speed on each shift in Eco-Mode. Again, Performance mode gave me about 300 additional rpm on each upshift.
ECoast kicked in a few times at various points on the loop, and it works amazingly well. Having the transmission disengage from the driveline is an interesting way of saving fuel, but the good part is the re-engagement. Even going from idle speed to 1,900 rpm with the engine brake full-on, the transition was unbelievably smooth. Usually re-engagement isn't that dramatic, so drivers will not have any problems with this feature.
It's worth noting, too, that during the cross-country fuel economy test Daimler did with this truck in the spring, where it averaged 9.3 mpg, the truck was in eCoast mode for an astonishing 650 miles of the 2,400-mile trip from San Diego, Calif., to Gastonia, N.C.
Conclusions
If reduced engine speed is a key to improved fuel economy, this transmission is going to win Daimler many fans. It upshifts at consistently low engine speed, even when skip-shifting, which it does most of the time.
The clutch engagement is impossibly smooth, during both upshifts and downshifts, and even under extreme conditions going from idle to 1,900 rpm with full engine braking.
The controls are dead simple to use, and provide a ton of functionality and driver selection - although some will be equally happy just to stick it in D and go.
It's now easy to see why Renschler had that cat-that-ate-the-canary smile when he announced the DT12.
Driver Interface
The DT12 shifter stalk is a model of functionality, simplicity and even elegance. For starters, it's on the right side of the steering column where the driver's right hand naturally rests - in the absence of a gearshift knob. Second, it's a paddle-shaped device, so it's easy to hit without reaching, and the control surfaces are large and easy to manipulate.
The drive and reverse selector, obvious in the photo, is a rotary switch that goes right around the stalk so it can be gripped easily. It switches between manual and automatic operation with a press of the button at the end of the stalk. In manual mode, up-and down-shifting is done by pulling or pushing the stalk fore and aft, accordingly. Moving the stalk up or down engages a three-stage engine brake.
A dash display provides gear selection, operating mode and other information to keep drivers in the loop. Together, the display and the shifter are very intuitive and really easy to use-just like its predecessor, the right-arm rest.

11/29/2012 The urge to compare is great, but I will resist. Both Peterbilt's Model 579 and Kenworth's T68O were introduced with much fanfare at the Mid-America Trucking Show earlier this year. I have already said in this space that I really like the latter, and now I can echo those sentiments for the Model 579.Both trucks benefited from a great deal of market research, some shared between the two Paccar companies, some kept private. It's interesting to see how the two companies and their design teams prioritized various features and design elements.
You can tell from a distance that the two trucks began life on the same drawing board, but it's unlikely anyone will mistake the two. Both, I'm convinced, will further a sense of brand loyalty among their customers rather than blur the lines.At the cab and chassis level, the similarities are obvious, but up close, it's a different story.

The cab
Let's begin where the driver meets the truck - the cab. As you climb in and sit behind the wheel, the truck sort of wraps itself around you. As a confessed fan of the smaller cockpit type cabs - which are becoming rare these days - I admit to being absolutely sold on this 2.1-meter-wide cab. I have never measured off what I consider a comfortable space; I just know intuitively what feels good. The 579 felt good.
Because it was designed as a solo driver's truck, the amenities and storage were conceived for a single occupant. There's not as much storage as there could be, but it's more open and airier as a result. Personally, I'll take the openness over more boxes into which I can stuff more junk. The cab and sleeper of the 579, with their light grey, taupe and tan color scheme, are warmly inviting, roomy and very easy on the eyes.
The dash line in the truck is lower than Peterbilt's Model 587, and the top of the windshield is higher, so overall there's more glass. This gives the driver excellent forward visibility but doesn't make you feel like you're sitting in a fish bowl. The lower beltline in the side windows adds to that open feeling.
Those with a keen eye will notice that the sleeper compartment, at least from the outside, appears to be the same as the one on the Model 386. Landon Sproull, Peterbilt's chief engineer, says the shell is manufactured the same way, but the front bulkhead and everything inside are different.
"It's a discrete sleeper, detachable for subsequent owners if desired," he says. "Peterbilt believes that will add value to the second or third owner who might be using it for local or regional work, or even for a vocational conversion. We've also changed the forward bulkhead completely, and we have a much bigger walkthrough opening."
Peterbilt engineers looked at repair and service records and found that damage to the rear quarters of the sleeper was common in jackknife incidents, and even in tight cornering situations, so they elected to go with a proven, easy-to-repair, flat sheet metal and huck-bolt design.
The hood, the cab styling and the aero trim, including the side skirts, roof fairing, sun visor and cab extenders, are all unique to Peterbilt. The roof fairing, for example, is pulled farther forward than on other models, and because the sleeper is detachable, the cab roof, the detachable side trim and fairings are designed to optimize airflow over and around the cab.
It starts with the shape of the hood, of course, which gets air flowing in the proper path. A testament to the effectiveness of the design comes when cruising at 65 mph with the side windows down. You can barely hear the air rushing by and the wind does not billow into the cab.

Creature comforts
The driver's perch and the dash panel are very well done in the 579. It's a trucky-enough dash, but with a nod to upscale automotive styling. The fit and finish is reminiscent of BMW or Audi quality. Switch and gauge layouts are a matter of personal preference, but because they are multiplexed, they can be moved around to suit individual taste. The bottom line is, they are very easy to read and reach, and they look great at night. Better still, they can be dimmed, and there's almost no distracting reflection from the dash panel on the side windows.
Back in the sleeper, you'll find an asymmetrical layout with a workstation on the driver's side, along with a couple of cubby holes and the sleeper lighting and HVAC control panel. It's well set up for work, and again, nice and open. A drawer conceals a pull-out desk, and below that is a good-sized storage bin.
On the right-hand side are the fridge and the wardrobe cabinet. On the wall is the mounting hardware for a flat-screen TV or computer monitor. The roomy storage bins are mounted high to keep them from spoiling the view, but they are easy enough to reach into.

On the outside
The big hood took quite a tug to get open, and it needed a bit of a push to close, too. Nothing a 200-pound driver can't handle, but someone leaner might have a bit of a hard time checking the oil.
The daily inspection points were easy to get to, and the engine compartment - stuffed with a big Cummins ISX engine - was generally neat, orderly and easy to inspect visually. The addition of disc brakes makes it easier to
get right up beside the engine, but I think climbing up onto the wheel to clean the windows could prove a little challenging. There aren't many convenient grab points and fewer footholds, save for the drag link on the power steering. The mirror gets in the way if you're coming up the cab access steps.
I also found access to the rear deck a little awkward. When in close proximity to a trailer, the driver would be able to press a hand against the trailer for stability, but reaching around the fairing to the grab handle is quite difficult. The steps up the deck are great, and the deck itself is huge, but the climb up wasn't graceful. I'd like the air and electrical dummy hookups moved to the side of the sleeper rather than where they are in the center, so they would be easier to reach without climbing.
To be fair, I noticed similar challenges driving the Kenworth T680, not on the original test drive, but on a subsequent, longer drive.

Driving the 579
I really can't say enough about the way the 579 takes to the road. The Peterbilt Air-Leaf front suspension smooths out the highway without taking away the feel of the pavement. You can certainly feel the imperfections in the road, but they aren't jarring. It holds itself well on Interstates as well as two-lane roads, and there's little doubt about where you are in a lane, thanks to the tremendous visibility.
A nod to the mirrors is in order. They are big, but not obtrusive, and they are far enough away from the cab that they don't create turbulence you can feel and hear in the cab. Importantly, the right-hand mirror and the right-hand A-pillar do not blend together to form a large obstruction. There's a gap between them so you can see what's coming at you from the side.
It was raining when I picked up the truck at the Peterbilt factory in Denton, Texas, so the windshield wipers got a test, too. They are nearly as tall as the windshield, and the sweep is very broad, giving excellent visibility.
A new UltraNav option, will fit where the six analog gauges are on this truck, just above the radio.

The truck I drove wasn't a top-of-the-line owner-operator spec, but it wasn't lacking, either. The cloth interior and the carpeted floor made a big difference in the personal feel of the truck. It made for a nice, quiet ride and very comfortable environment - in and out of the sleeper. It's a truck you won't get tired of driving anytime soon.
