WACO - A local truck driver is facing theft charges after allegedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of his own cargo.
Paul Triny Reyes, 45, is accused of stealing merchandise from trucks at Central Transport's Waco distribution center in the 2200 block of S. 3rd Street. According to a representative from Central Transport, Reyes started work as a truck driver for the company in 2007.
After conducting an internal investigation, the representative said the company discovered Reyes had been stealing merchandise since December of 2010.
The list of stolen items is long, and reads like a tech guru's wish list. TVs, laptop computers, tablet computers, stereo components, DVD players, clothing items and more were among the items reported missing. The value of the merchandise is estimated to be $31,647.
"Anytime you have a theft like this, and of this amount of value in this amount of property, it absolutely cuts into the profit gains of the businesses that are involved," explained Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton.
According to Sgt. Swanton, Paul Reyes turned himself in Thursday and reportedly confessed to stealing from Central Transport over several years.
The representative from Central Transport told News Channel 25 the company is pleased with Reyes' arrest and is now seeking prosecution and restitution for their losses.
Waco police plan to serve a warrant on a second employee from Central Transport accused of similar crimes. Sgt. Swanton said he expected an arrest to be made soon
